UNS N08020, also known as Alloy 20 is one of the "super" stainless steels developed for maximum resistance to acid attack, making it valuable in both stainless and nickel industries. This alloy combines characteristics of both stainless steel and nickel alloys, though it is officially classified as a nickel-based alloy.
Alloy 20 is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium based alloy with additions of copper and molybdenum. Its nickel content provides chloride ion stress and corrosion resistance, while copper and molybdenum enhance resistance to hostile environments, pitting, and crevice corrosion. Chromium contributes to resistance against oxidizing environments like nitric acid, and columbium (niobium) reduces carbide precipitation effects.
Most welding methods can be used with Alloy 20 (except oxyacetylene welding), and it can be hot formed using similar forces as austenitic stainless steels. For machining, excellent finishes can be achieved using the same setups and speeds as for Stainless Steels 316 or 317.
