The chemical composition of 440C includes carbon (C), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and other elements. The high carbon content provides exceptional hardness and wear resistance, while chromium content between 17%-19% delivers excellent corrosion resistance.

Physical Properties

440C stainless steel has a density of approximately 7.78 g/cm³, with a melting point between 1398-1454℃. Its low thermal conductivity ensures stability in high temperature environments.

Heat Treatment Process

The heat treatment process involves quenching and tempering:

  • Quenching: Heating above critical temperature followed by rapid cooling to obtain martensite structure
  • Tempering: Heating below critical temperature after quenching to eliminate stress and improve toughness
Mechanical Properties

After proper heat treatment, 440C achieves:

  • Tensile strength: ≥880 MPa
  • Yield strength: ≈780 MPa
  • Good plasticity and toughness despite relatively low elongation
Corrosion Resistance

The high chromium content forms a protective oxide film that prevents corrosion. 440C performs well in atmospheric conditions and resists acids, alkalis, and other corrosive media.
